I am posting this from a player POV.
We have all heard rumors or Semi-Vanilla unturned coming to SG servers eventually. This is even shown in the server list as [COMING SOON].
Just a few thoughts and comments about this upcoming server. (I would love feedback from y'all)
What kind of semi vanilla are we talking about?
Generally when I think of semi vanilla in unturned I think of 10x Loot servers with OP kits and /teleport and /home that make it almost impossible to solo fight or raid any group over 2 players. This is equally combatable by limiting the group size and time inbetween commands. If kits are considered OP they can be limited to maybe once every couple days. If teleporting is clearly dominating as it does on most semi vanilla servers then a combat log system or cooldown for teleporting can be set into place. As long as commands and kits are used in moderation it shouldnt be an issue.
Another concern including my previous statements are about the rates of the server. A lot of semi vanilla servers have a roll over time (unofficial player wipe) every couple days. There is always new groups taking over the server and never a consistent player base of regulars. This is most commonly due to high loot spawn rates. You generally see servers with 5x and up rates have very high roll over rates as getting raiding supplies is very easy and there is almost no point or value to loot. Its quite simply, if loot becomes more common then the loot itself loses value. From personal experience I would join 10x servers, get a gun and use them as a pvp/battle royal server instead of playing the game as a survival game where you are attempting to progress. As long as the rates are low enough and close enough to vanilla the game can still be played as a survival game if server wipes happened frequently enough.
What Map should this be held on?
Personally I think semi vanillas are often held on smaller maps due to them being more of a battle royal or PVP based server. If the goal is to create a good community of regulars and consistent players, it should be hosted on a larger map so less raiding happens and more players have the ability to spread out and avoid PVP if desired. In a perfect world the semi vanilla could be held on every map but with the limitations we have I would say the best map to host a semi vanilla server would be Russia, hawaii, or kuwait. All large maps that have quest lines and great possibility for players if executed correctly. Personally I would say Russia would be the best fit as it has some of the highest population on our vanilla servers.
Will there be donator perks or kits available?
This is a common thing amongst semi vanilla servers, they allow you to donate for specific kits or perks. Now generally I wouldnt do this but as SG is one of my only servers I enjoy I would probably pay for these perks and kits. The only thing I dont like when it comes to buying kits and perks is when it becomes pay-to-win. Its understandable that a player who donates should recieve significantly better loot dependent on what they donate, but loot that would be considered game breaking or pay-to-win is not something I think should happen. When I say pay-to-win I am specifically talking about raiding loot. Powerful weapon kits or gear kits such as alice packs, thief clothing, etc. would not be concerning to me. It only becomes concerning when these players who pay are given the ability to spawn in tanks, or are givien explosives in their kits that will allow them to raid a base without working for it. As long as kits are some what balanced and not pay-to-win it should be great. I will likely donate if they are solid kits that keep the pace of the game enjoyable and the pvp solid.
What other features or mods are you looking forward to in a semi vanilla PVP server hosted by Smithtainment Gaming?
